Very few factors can predict successful therapy better than finding the right therapist.
Although all therapists have received advanced training and close supervision, each therapist is a unique individual with traits, characteristics, and mannerisms that may affect your level of comfort. In addition, there are dozens of prevailing therapy theories, each of which is founded on a specific set of beliefs and goals.
To make it more confusing, there is no other relationship to compare with the client-therapist relationship. A therapist is not a friend, a parent, or a policeman. She should be a good listener, non-judgmental, and allow you to feel comfortable telling the truth.
The best way to find a good fit with your therapist is to become an informed consumer and “shop around.” Because of this, I offer a free, no-obligation, 30-minute consultation for new clients. This gives you a chance to meet me in person, ask questions, discuss your goals, and talk about treatment options. Most importantly, you will get a sense for my professional style.
